Panthers Acquire Tkachuk, Sign to Long-Term Extension
CALGARY, Alberta - The Calgary Flames have traded star winger Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers in a blockbuster deal that shakes up the NHL landscape.
On Friday night, Tkachuk was sent to the Panthers in exchange for forwards Jonathan Huberdeau, MacKenzie Weegar, and Cole Schwindt, as well as a first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.
Tkachuk, a restricted free agent, has also signed an eight-year, $76 million contract extension with the Panthers, solidifying his long-term future in South Florida.
The trade marks a significant shift for both the Flames and Panthers. Calgary loses one of its most talented and dynamic players, while Florida adds a proven performer who has established himself as one of the league's top young stars.
Tkachuk, the son of former NHLer Keith Tkachuk, has spent his entire career with the Flames, amassing 152 goals and 150 assists in 431 regular-season games. He has also been a key contributor in the playoffs, helping Calgary reach the Western Conference Finals twice in the past three seasons.
The Panthers, meanwhile, have been a rising force in the NHL, reaching the Presidents' Trophy in 2022 for the best regular-season record. The addition of Tkachuk is expected to bolster their offensive firepower and solidify their status as Stanley Cup contenders.
The Flames are expected to hold a press conference on Saturday morning to discuss the trade and its implications for the franchise.
