UN: Urgent need to end Gaza violence

UN rights chief calls for end to hostilities, protection of civilians

The UN human rights chief on Wednesday called for an immediate end to the violence in the Gaza Strip and southern Israel, and urged all sides to protect civilians.

"The situation in Gaza and southern Israel is escalating rapidly, with a high risk of further civilian casualties," UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said in a statement.

"I call on all parties to cease fire immediately and to respect their obligations under international law to protect civilians," he added.

Ceasefire needed to prevent further loss of life

Turk said that the ongoing violence has already caused "unacceptable" suffering and loss of life.

"At least 49 Palestinians, including 17 children, have been killed in Gaza since the escalation began on Friday," he said. "In Israel, six people, including a child, have been killed by rocket fire from Gaza."

"These numbers are likely to rise as the violence continues," he warned. "It is imperative that all parties cease fire immediately to prevent further loss of life."

Protection of civilians paramount

Turk also stressed the importance of protecting civilians during any armed conflict.

"All parties must take all possible measures to avoid civilian casualties and to protect civilian infrastructure," he said.

"This includes refraining from targeting civilians or civilian objects, and taking precautions to minimize the risk of harm to civilians," he added.

International community must act

Turk called on the international community to take action to end the violence and protect civilians.

"The international community must act urgently to prevent further bloodshed and to support efforts to find a sustainable solution to the conflict," he said.

"I urge all parties to engage in meaningful dialogue and to work towards a just and lasting peace," he added.
