Early Life and Education

Gretchen Esther Whitmer was born on August 23, 1971, in Lansing, Michigan. She is the eldest of three children born to Sharon H. and Richard Whitmer. Her mother served as the state's assistant attorney general, while her father was a lawyer and lobbyist.

Whitmer graduated from Forest Hills Central High School in 1989 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from Michigan State University in 1993. She then received her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in 1998.

Political Career

Whitmer began her political career in 2000 when she was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives. She served in the House from 2001 to 2006, representing the 23rd District. In 2006, she was elected to the Michigan Senate, where she served from 2007 to 2014. Whitmer was the Senate Minority Leader from 2011 to 2014.
