A Libertarian Walks Into a Bear: The Utopian Plot to Liberate an American Town and Some Bears

By Matthew Hongoltz-Hetling

In the mid-2000s, in a small New Hampshire town called Grafton, there was a strange social experiment called the Free Town Project. The idea was to create a libertarian utopia, a place where the government would be minimal and individuals would be free to live their lives as they pleased.

One of the early proponents of the Free Town Project was a man named Jason Sorens. Sorens was a libertarian activist who believed that the government was the root of all evil. He and his followers moved to Grafton in the hopes of creating a society where they could live free from government interference.

At first, the Free Town Project seemed to be a success. The libertarians were able to elect several members to the town council, and they began to implement their libertarian agenda. They passed laws that reduced taxes, deregulated businesses, and legalized drugs.

But the libertarians' utopia was not to be. In the years that followed, the town was plagued by a series of problems, including a sharp increase in crime and poverty. The libertarians were unable to solve these problems, and the Free Town Project eventually collapsed.

The story of the Free Town Project is a cautionary tale about the dangers of libertarianism. It shows that when the government is too weak, society can quickly fall apart.
